Trademark Usage Guidelines

What is a trademark?

A trademark includes any word, name, symbol, or device, or any combination, used, or intended to be used, in commerce to identify and distinguish the goods of one manufacturer or seller from goods manufactured or sold by others, and to indicate the source of the goods. In short, a trademark is a brand name.

What is a service mark?

A service mark is any word, name, symbol, device, or any combination, used, or intended to be used, in commerce, to identify and distinguish the services of one provider from services provided by others, and to indicate the source of the services.

How can I find out more about trademarks or service marks? Visit the Patent & Trademark Office web site.

Identifying trademark symbols

  • The symbol ® is used adjacent to the mark after it is registered as a trademark or service mark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • The symbol TM is used with all trademarks for which a registration has not yet been issued.
  • The symbol SM is used with all service marks for which a registration has not yet been issued.

Referential trademark usage

You may use a CCLI trademark or product name to refer specifically to the product in marketing and promotional materials, books, conferences, applications, demonstrations, and so on. You are permitted to use a CCLI trademark referentially provided that:
  • You adhere to these CCLI Trademark Usage Guidelines,
  • You do not disparage CCLI or CCLI products and services.
  • You display your name or logo more prominently than any CCLI trademark.
  • You include a disclaimer that CCLI does not sponsor, affiliate or endorse your product and/or service.

General trademark usage guidelines

  1. Use appropriate markings. Capitalize the product name and designate the trademark with the appropriate symbol, as noted above.
    Incorrect: The song search capabilities of SongSelect software are excellent.
    Correct: The song search capabilities of SongSelect® software are excellent.

    Also, the first usage or most prominent usage of a CCLI product name must be used in conjunction with the CCLI® trademark and in the same type size, font, color and line.
    Correct: CCLI® SongSelect®

  2. Use CCLI trademarks as adjectives. Use CCLI trademarks as adjectives that describe the generic product. A trademark is to be used with the noun it modifies.
    Incorrect: CCLI® SongSelect® is an excellent product.
    Correct: CCLI® SongSelect® software is an excellent product.
  3. Attribute ownership of CCLI trademarks to CCLI. When you reference a CCLI trademark, please include the following notice of trademark attribution where appropriate, such as on your product, printed materials, and online.
    Correct: CCLI and __________ are trademarks or registered trademarks of Christian Copyright Licensing, Inc. in the United States and/or other countries.

Specific trademark usage guidelines

  1. Logos. You may not use any CCLI logos (including buttons and graphic symbols) without a trademark license from CCLI. All usage of trademark logos shall be pursuant to these guidelines and any other guidelines associated with that logo.
  2. Merchandise items. You may not manufacture, sell, or give away merchandise items bearing CCLI trademarks or logos, except pursuant to and express written trademark license from CCLI.
  3. Slogans and taglines. You may not use or imitate a CCLI slogan or tagline such as "serving the church in worship".
